Annie Leibovitz Lands in Spain with “Wonderland”

Dear Shaded Viewers,

The Marta Ortega Pérez Foundation (MOP) in A Coruña will unveil Wonderland, the first major retrospective in Spain dedicated to Annie Leibovitz, the photographer whose piercing portraits have shaped cultural memory for over five decades. Opening on November 22, the exhibition brings together four chapters of her career, from intimate portraits of musicians to her genre-defining explorations of fashion photography.

Leibovitz began her ascent in the 1970s, chronicling icons such as John Lennon, Mick Jagger, and Bob Dylan for Rolling Stone. The show traces that trajectory through art, cinema, sports, and politics, before arriving at the heart of the exhibition: her fashion imagery—much of it never before seen in a public show. Vogue collaborations inspired by fairy tales sit alongside cinematic portraits of extraordinary women, revealing her gift for narrative in a single frame.

Divided into four sections—including an immersive installation from her time touring with the Rolling Stones—Wonderland culminates in a spectacular display of 100 fashion images and videos. Although Leibovitz has often resisted the label of fashion photographer, this body of work reveals both her mastery of storytelling and her painterly command of color, tone, and light.

Marta Ortega Pérez, president of the foundation, describes Leibovitz’s genius as her ability “to capture the aura of her subjects and see truths no one else can.” She also underlines the significance of having Leibovitz as the first woman featured in the foundation’s acclaimed photography program, which has already staged shows devoted to Peter Lindbergh, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, and Steven Meisel.

To accompany the exhibition, the foundation is releasing a film and publication featuring interviews with long-time collaborators, including Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Gloria Steinem, and Tina Brown. Or, as Springsteen put it himself: “Once Annie photographs you, that’s how the world sees you.”

Wonderland runs from November 22, 2025, at the Fundación MOP in A Coruña, Spain.
