Olympic Fashion: From Ceremony to Museum a collaboration between designer Jeanne Friot and leather artisan Robert Mercier

Dear Shaded Viewers,

The Palais Galliera’s upcoming exhibition “La Mode en mouvement #3” will showcase the  fusion of sports, history, and haute couture. At its center stands the rider armor from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony, a piece that captivated global audiences and now finds a new home in the hallowed halls of fashion history.

This iconic ensemble, a collaboration between designer Jeanne Friot and leather artisan Robert Mercier, is more than mere clothing. It’s a symbol of French cultural heritage, Olympic spirit, and cutting-edge design. The armour ingeniously melds the imagery of Joan of Arc with Sequana, the Seine’s goddess, creating a powerful representation of Paris itself.

Mercier’s talent extends beyond Olympic ceremonies, on a personal note,  he created the trophy for ASVOFF 13 (A Shaded View on Fashion Film), crafting it expertly in leather. This connection highlights the intertwining of fashion, film, and sports, showcasing how artisanal skills can transcend traditional boundaries and make an impact across various creative domains.

The presence of Mercier’s work in both the Olympic ceremony and ASVOFF  underscores the versatility and enduring appeal of fine leather craftsmanship. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and celebrating the artisans who bring designers’ visions to life, contributing to the rich tapestry of fashion history.

The exhibition, running from February 8 to October 12, 2025, offers a unique opportunity to examine this sartorial masterpiece up close. Visitors can enjoy intricate details of the hooded removable cuirass, braconnière, bodysuit, leggings, gloves, and thigh-high boots that compose this remarkable outfit.
