Inspired by Bosch’s ‘Ship of Fools,’ Torishéju’s SS25 collection featured wide-shouldered silk tailcoats, flowing dresses, and bloomers, envisioning a decadent aristocracy on a doomed ship. the collection reminded us that we should all stay afloat in the world we currently live in.
As the music swelled, and the lights flashed – almost if lightening was striking, the collection began to evoke a sense of maritime disaster. Loose, unfussy draping, raw hems, and sheer fabrics created a sense of disarray. Torishéju mimicked the iconic life vests from the Titanic by stuffing the translucent outer layers of dresses and skirts with clusters of fabric scraps. These ballooning hemlines, once graceful and flowing, now appeared submerged and overwhelmed. This same opulent yet undone aesthetics carried into the evening looks. Crinkled silk, maxi dresses in ivory and black, and tartan bloomers layered under micro-mini skirts exuded a sense of luxury and rebellion.
This season, Torishéju introduced a more commercially focused line, featuring tailored pieces and evening dresses reflecting her growing business strategy that emphasises made-to-order designs alongside select wholesale partnerships. All of her creations were produced in London using sustainable deadstock fabrics.
Torishéju’s ability to create a visually pleasing collection that has a story behind it something that is always needed in fashion. the story gels every looks together cohesively. Her use of proportions is also what stands out this season, with many looks featuring slim and slender silhouettes at the top then growing in volume towards the bottom — almost reminiscent of the waves crashing just before a shipwreck. The collection emulates the inspiration she mentions in her show notes, making you feel that we should all try to stay afloat indeed.
