Dear Shaded Viewers,
The Chinese Taipei Olympic Team, competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, showcase uniforms that blend tradition, innovation, and sustainability, designed by Justin Chou of the avant-garde streetwear brand JUST IN XX. This marks Chou’s second Olympic design, following his acclaimed work for the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Chou’s design for the Paris Olympics is a testament to Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage and cutting-edge technology. The uniforms feature Paul Chiang’s “Mountain Range of Taiwan” artwork, printed on fabric using advanced low-carbon, waterless technology in partnership with Taiwanese textile giant New Wide Group. The shimmering blue pattern evokes the island’s mountainous terrain and surrounding seas, creating a visual representation of Taiwan’s natural beauty.
Traditional Taiwanese craftsmanship takes center stage in the uniforms. Artisan Yan Yu-Ying’s banana fiber weaving, an ancient textile tradition from the indigenous Kavalan culture, is incorporated into the belts and shoe uppers. This eco-friendly material not only pays homage to Taiwan’s cultural roots but also aligns with the growing emphasis on sustainability in Olympic fashion.
The uniforms also feature intricate floral chest pins created by Lin Pei-Ying, depicting Taiwan’s regional flower, the plum blossom, and the canola flower. These delicate adornments symbolize encouragement, the pursuit of dreams, and fearlessness, conveying heartfelt blessings to the Olympic athletes. The inclusion of these floral elements serves as a powerful representation of Taiwan’s cultural diversity.
In a clever design twist, typography designer Kokia Lin created an optical illusion that transforms the words “Chinese Taipei” into “Cheer on” when viewed from the side. This innovative element encourages and supports the athletes from Chinese Taipei to participate in the Paris Olympics.
The uniforms prioritize athlete comfort and performance with breathable, high-performance textiles. Chou’s collaboration with Taiwanese textile giant New Wide Group has resulted in fabrics that ensure optimal comfort during competition. The accessories, including shoes made with eco-friendly bio-leather and banana silk, further demonstrate the commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Justin Chou’s design for the Chinese Taipei team at the Paris 2024 Olympics is a harmonious blend of Taiwan’s cultural heritage, artistic expression, and technological prowess. By incorporating traditional crafts, sustainable materials, and innovative design elements, these uniforms not only represent athletic excellence, but are also celebrate Taiwan’s unique diversity. As the world turns its eyes to Paris, the Chinese Taipei team proudly wears uniforms that tell a story of thoughtfulness, creativity and commitment to a sustainable future.
