A Dark to Light Transformation with Gaurav Gupta’s AW24 “Jyotirgamaya”. by Eliya Weinstein

Dear Shaded viewers,

Gaurav Gupta’s AW24 Couture collection is a sartorial transformation from darkness to enlightenment, woven with the inspiration of “Jyotirgamaya”. The Sanskrit term titling the collection represents a spiritual, transcendental journey, which the Couturier interweaves with Vedic philosophy and Egyptian mysticism to achieve a timeless collection.

Gupta’s minimal colour palette represents the transformation from darkness to light literally, evoking the depth with which “Jyotirgamaya” resonates with him. The Black of the abyss swirls around the shell of gold metal breastplates and breaks through with the adornment of intricate metallic beadwork. Deep Bordeaux showcases corsetry, draping and sculpting techniques that render the unfolding layers of enlightenment. Moonstone Ivory and soft Sand signify the final stages, where light and reflection emerge.

While Gupta’s sculptural silhouettes remain a signature, he took a more balanced approach in design to welcome a wider customer base into his universe. The ancient Aari embroidery techniques and Zari Zardosi embroidery elaborating a number of gowns with a dance of reflection and light. A contemporary take on the saree and Sharara showcases his masterful command on drapery and the silhouette with a practicality that shows the Couturier understands his audience.

AW24 additionally introduces artisanal jewellery into Gaurav Gupta’s offerings. Antique gold and silver take shape in the Chakra ear cuff, the Infinity ear cuff, and the Gaja ear cuff. The Mudra ear cuff, the Bahu Mudra ear cuff and the Chakra choker are all designed in brass.
