Jean Paul Gaultier exhibits with CinéMode in SCAD Lacoste until September, 30th

Dear Shaded Viewers,

This summer SCAD FASH Lacoste presents  “CinéMode par Jean Paul Gaultier,” at the university’s international campus in Provence. Curated by the inimitable Jean Paul Gaultier, in partnership with La Cinémathèque française, curators Matthieu Orléan and Florence Tissot, and the “La Caixa” Foundation, this showcase merges cinematic glamour with Gaultier’s visionary flair.

For those of you that missed the exciting exhibition when it debuted at  La Cinémathèque française, you now have another opportunity at SCAD FASH Lacoste.

“I owe my vocation to the cinema. I would never have become a couturier if I had not seen Jacques Becker’s Falbalas. Filmed in the 1940s, during the last year of World War II, it is the story of a couturier and his muse. When I saw it with my grandmother on TV, we both cried at the end—and I instantly knew what I wanted to become as there was a fashion show in the film. Cinema has been a constant source of inspiration for my collections. I have been fortunate to work in the cinema with directors I admire: Peter Greenaway, Marc Caro, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Luc Besson, and Pedro Almodóvar. I am pleased that the exhibition CinéMode will be shown at SCAD Lacoste. I have had the pleasure to work with graduates of the university, and I started my career with Pierre Cardin who is inextricably linked with Lacoste.” said Jean Paul Gaultier.

SCAD President and Founder, Paula Wallace enthuses, Sartorialists and cinephiles the world over will be enchanted by Jean Paul Gaultier’s CinéMode at SCAD FASH Lacoste — where JPG brilliantly explores the marriage of Hollywood glamor and French couture through icons like Marlene Dietrich, Catherine Deneuve, and Brigitte Bardot. Film meets fashion now and forever at SCAD Lacoste. Step into sumptuous, cinematic luxury in the Luberon!”

In CinéMode, Gaultier’s dual passions for design and film coalesce in an exclusive presentation at SCAD FASH Lacoste. The exhibition features haute couture and costumes in thematic vignettes, showcasing the evolution of gender roles and their subversions—from Marlene Dietrich to Donyale Luna—alongside Gaultier’s cinematic collaborations with auteurs like Pedro Almodóvar.

Recognized as one of the world’s preeminent couturiers and the “enfant terrible” of French fashion, Gaultier is celebrated for his provocative, genre-defying collections. His ascent to global stardom was cemented when he dressed Madonna for her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour. Gaultier’s cinematic repertoire includes iconic designs for films such as “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover” (1989), “The City of Lost Children” (1995), “The Fifth Element” (1997), and multiple works by Almodóvar, solidifying his legacy in both fashion and film.

SCAD Lacoste is a residential study-abroad location in France.  The campus features structures dating from the ninth to the 19th centuries, equipped with cutting-edge contemporary amenities.

SCAD is a private, nonprofit, accredited university offering over 100 graduate and undergraduate degree programs across locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia; Lacoste, France; and online via SCADnow.
