Simone Rocha’s Ethereal Elegance: A Modern Twist on Jean Paul Gaultier’s Legacy

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Since gracefully stepping down from the helm of his namesake Maison, Jean Paul Gaultier has embraced a tradition of inviting diverse designers to infuse their unique visions into the label each season. Past creative directors such as Julien Dossena, Haider Ackermann, Olivier Rousteing, Glenn Martens, and Chitose Abe have all contributed their distinctive styles. For the 2024 Haute Couture season, London-based Irish designer Simone Rocha took up the mantle, creating a collection that seamlessly blended her aesthetic with the iconic codes of JPG.

In true Simone Rocha fashion, her Jean Paul Gaultier collection was a visual and emotional delight. Infused with her effortlessly ethereal touch and adorned with symbols of girlhood, including her pioneering use of bows, the lineup struck a perfect balance between delicacy and power. Rocha drew inspiration from Gaultier’s archive, incorporating signature elements like marinière stripes, conical bras, and satin corsets. Yet, she reinterpreted these classic motifs through her own lens, skillfully harmonizing the identities of both brands to produce something entirely fresh.

The collection exuded a sense of classic romance, infusing it with a contemporary twist. Bold, massive tulle gowns in shades of blush, red, and black gracefully shared the runway with corseted mini dresses and sheer slips. The result was a sensual, feminine, and powerful collection that embodied the essence of both the JPG girl and the Simone Rocha muse.
