Couture’s Alchemist: Clara Daguin’s Dazzling Odyssey into Fashion’s Technological Frontier

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Clara Daguin stands out as a trailblazing scientist in the realm of couture, often hailed as the laboratory of fashion. While many couturiers shy away from bold experimentation, Daguin fearlessly embraces innovation.

Her chosen materials include technical tulle, gabardine, techy silk, LEDs, and copper wire, resulting in collections that captivate with phantasmagorical elements. Groovily galactic coats and jumpsuits of light, alongside acid-stained velvet dresses adorned with stars, showcase her imaginative prowess.

In her latest creation, the French-born and California-raised designer conceived the Space Trash dress, drawing inspiration from the notion of space debris colliding in outer space. Intrigued by the collision of minuscule particles generating celestial trash, Daguin translated this fascination into a full dress made of technical tulle. The dress is embellished with LED chains and adorned with shards of broken resin, mimicking the appearance of smashed transistors and terminals.

Among her other innovative pieces is a fencing-style jacket crafted from transparent tulle, featuring intricate designs of polyester threads, copper wire, and LEDs. Despite the luminosity, there’s a surprising lack of heat, even in her debut handbag trimmed with light.

Daguin presented at Atelier Basfroi on Paris’ rue Basfroi.

Her avant-garde endeavors extend beyond the runway, as evidenced by her previous creche installation inside the historic medieval church of Saint Eustache in Les Halles. This unconventional exhibition showcased Joseph and Mary donning LED-illuminated cassocks while cradling an Infant Jesus – a reassuringly inert baby dummy.
