Master Couturier, Artist and Designer
Founded his eponymous label in 2005, after graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Over the last eighteen years, the designer has carved a world that is Indian at its core and boundless in its form merging indigenous Indian construction and embellishing techniques with his idea of the future. The brand’s sculptural silhouettes regularly appear on the world’s Best Dressed Lists for The Oscars, The Emmy Awards, the Tony Awards and the Festival de Cannes to name a few. His designs have graced magazine covers, billboards, music videos and red carpets around the globe dressing Lizzo, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Aishwarya Rai, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Saweetie, Mexican singer Thalia, Kylie Minogue, Violet Chachki, Olivia Culpo, Maluma and Fan Bing Bing amongst others.
Best described as future primitive, the couturier’s design language is a composition of what might be and what was and has been hailed as the ‘Future of Couture’, ‘Rule Breaker’, ‘Ecopolitan Designer of the Year’ and has been awarded at Mittelmoda, Altaroma Altamoda, Makuhari Grand Prix amongst other prestigious platforms.
Known and coveted for his showmanship, Gaurav has time and again, transported his audiences to worlds of phantasmagoria. His shows have pioneered collaborations with light design, larger than life sculptures, immersive theatre and experiential poetry. He was also invited to showcase at London’s Animal Ball 2019, hosted by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.
In other collaborations, Gaurav’s installation ‘Tunnel of Infinity’ was a part of Santati, a travelling art exhibition commemorating 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi which opened at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai. He was also the exclusive designer to collaborate with Vogue and IBM to create India’s first garment based on Artificial Intelligence.
Gaurav Gupta Man became a reality in 2018 with an opening show in collaboration with GQ India. Swiftly gathering attention for its fluid yet sharp designs, the menswear has seen instant and growing popularity among stars and clientele alike. That includes actors Ranveer Singh, Ayushmann Khurrana, Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra, film director Karan Johar, rapper Wyclef Jean and the Latin boy band CNCO.
Architecture and anatomy form a consistent dialogue in his work reflected in the brand’s retail spaces. From floating walls to murals that dissolve and sculpted fantastical creatures – they all give his spaces an allusion of part mystery, part dream. For this singular experience, his space design has been widely featured and awarded.
Gaurav Gupta Occasions Fine Jewellery is his latest venture through which he expands his tale of fantasy, told in handcrafted diamonds. Redefining precious couture jewellery, this line is now being noted for its kinetic design which gives the diamonds a dancing, ephemeral quality.
Education, cultural conservation and the Gaurav Gupta Earth Foundation form the designer’s ever-growing repertoire of upcoming works.
