Bold new icons at Jean Paul Gaultier by Olivier Rousteing Haute Couture AW 22/23 – text by Leticia Dare

Dear Shaded Viewers,

In an explosion of colour, creativity and freedom, Olivier Rousteing delivered Jean Paul Gaultier his way and what a joy it was to watch. As the crowd cheered, each iconic code of the Gaultier house was twisted, exaggerated, and played upon to deliver a new version of JPG that felt familiar and bold yet fresh. Considered and overtly playful, it brought a younger spin to trademarks of JPG.  It felt as though you could see Olivier’s personal inspirations and design signatures within each piece as if looking through his eyes of what JPG meant to him throughout his life. The perfume bottle of ‘Le Male’ playing a key role within the collection, heels were recreated perfume bottles, dresses literally a wearable version of the bottle. The perfume can was also highlighted through silver ankle boots (iconic already) and a full-length metallic gown complete with the JPG logo embossed across the chest. It was exciting to see the cult silhouettes of Madonna, the mariniere, corsets, bustiers, marine stripes and tailoring concepts pushed to the max in a way that only Olivier could do. The greatest hits amplified and remastered through gender fluid designs. Bravo Olivier!

Later,
