‘A Nos Enfants’ opens today in France at MK2 Beaubourg, at the Arlequin and at MK2 Bastille Directed by Maria De Medeiros

Dear Shaded Viewers,

‘A Nos Enfants’ opens today in France at MK2 Beaubourg, at the Arlequin and at MK2 Bastille on the Faubourg Saint-Antoine side. The film is about a son who has disappeared during the Brazilian dictatorship and the complicated relationship between a mother and daughter. Vera (Marieta Severo), a former activist against the military dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1985), has been in prison and now runs an orphanage for HIV-positive children in Rio. She is separated from her lawyer husband (José de Abreu) and her relationship with her daughter, Tania (Laura Castro), a future magistrate who is finishing her studies, has unravelled. She is in a relationship with Vanessa (Marta Nobrega), a graphic designer: both women are planning to have a baby, Vanessa dreams of carrying the child, but several artificial inseminations have failed. To Our Children is loosely adapted from the eponymous play by Laura Castro (who plays Tania in the film), created in 2013, in which Maria de Medeiros played the mother. The poster features Marieta Severo, Vera. Nos Enfants, written by Laura Castro on the subject of homoparentality.

Maria de Medeiros is a multi-talented actress and director in the fields of film, theatre and music. She has earned a host of awards including the Volpi Cup, awarded by the Venice Film Festival to the best actress for the film Two Brothers, My Sister by Teresa Villaverde, and numerous prizes for her first feature film Captains of April. As an aside, I am happy to say she is a dear friend. We met in 1997 when I was a costume designer on Tempete dans un verre d’eau for which she was the lead, the film was directed by Arnold Barkus.
