Yang Li Becomes the Fashion Creative Director of SHANG XIA by Aybuke Barkcin

SHANG XIA, founded in 2010 by Hermès and Qiong Er Jiang as a joint entrepreneurial initiative to create a Chinese heritage lifestyle brand, has tapped Chinese designer Yang Li to become the brand’s Fashion Creative Director.

Shang meaning up, Xia meaning down, the lifestyle brand has long adopted the power of contrasts, studying the connection between the digital and physical, east and west, tradition and innovation. From the famous Lan Yue bag to Da Tian Di furniture to Bridge Tea set… the brand offers a range of products from homeware, clothing, leather goods and accessories… bringing a contemporary expression to the Chinese heritage.

Following Exor’s investment in SHANG XIA in December 2020, the brand is getting ready to embrace a more fashion-driven approach under the vision of Beijing-native designer Yang Li.

Born in 1987, Yang Li spent his teenage years in Perth, Australia and moved to London to study at the Central Saint Martin in 2007. After interning at Gareth Pugh and Raf Simons, he launched his eponymous label in 2010 and went on to become one of the most successful designers to interpret youth subcultures and countercultures, drawing inspiration from music and art, building a brand which continuously explores dualities and unexpected contrasts. The poetic silhouettes which he fuses with classic tailoring are accompanied by powerful graphics and words, creating a visual language which bonds people into his community.

On Li’s appointment, Co-Founder and Creative Director of SHANG XIA, Qiong Er Jiang commented, “Yang Li’s personality and proven talent, as well as his vision of modernity and understanding of sustainability, means he will naturally embrace and enrich the unique heritage of SHANG XIA.”

Li will present his first SHANG XIA collection on October 4, 2021 as part of the Paris Fashion Week.
