Dear Shaded Viewers,
I had the opportunity to meet Thebe Magugu when he was at Sphere last February when we were still being physical just before COVID19 entered our lives. Thebe was the winner of the LVMH Prize in 2019 and that is when I first met him ever so briefly. I met him just before they ushered him off for the announcements of the winners. He was in a chat with my friend Linda Loppa who had been on the jury that year. That was very brief. Then I saw him at Sphere where we had time for a nice long chat and he walked me through his exhibition which was in an empty room with mannequins sitting on chairs and surrounded by photographs from his community. I’ve found his fashion films really inspiring as well as being educational.
