Dear Shaded Viewers,
A message from Cyril Duval:
Dear friends,
My birthday is on December 31st. So every end of the year, as the world gets older, I do too. This bizarre conjunction is always a great opportunity for me to pause and self-reflect on personal growth and my place/role in all of this.
This year however has shattered all expectations , and that introspective process started as early as mid March when I flew back from my participation to the public program of FRIEZE Los Angeles to my home in Taipei, right before the world came to a halt and international borders closed.
As you probably know, living in Taiwan in 2020 compares to an alternate reality vis-à-vis the rest of the world. Exemplary healthcare policies have lead the way to effectively securing the safety of a nation of nearly 24 millions inhabitants, and that includes me.
However, in a hyperconnected world, you’re never really alone. My self-imposed isolation never kept me away from the sorrow my friends and my family were experiencing. Eventually, and because this is the only thing I know how to do properly, I turned the sum of these complicated emotions into a creative vessel.
The online publication AQNB premieres today [BREAKING, broke, broken], the collaborative film with the musicien Dutch E Germ that resulted from this effort. Articulated as a Public Service Announcement, this new work looks like nothing I have ever done or showed publicly before. So please keep an open mind hehe 😌
Here’s to letting go of a traumatic year and moving on collectively in the right direction.
I wish you all the best, now and ever.
