Dear Shaded Viewers & Diane,
Through 12-03-2017 visitors are introduced to the Helmond-based Vlisco textile factory and through 12-02-2017, the museum shows work by Yinka Shonibare MBE.
Both exhibitions are unique, but they are also closely connected: for Shonibare the beautiful Vlisco fabric and patterns are a source of inspiration.
The British-Nigerian artist discovered in his work the ‘Dutch wax batik’, produced for the African market but Made in Helmond (NL).
“The positivity African women bring to society is incomparable.
Their resilience, their elegance and their beauty are magnificent.
They are the first to wake up and the last to go to bed.
They are the backbone of Africa” – Angelique Kidjo
In the exhibition ‘Vlisco 1:1 Un à Un’, Vlisco shows classic patterns, re-interpretations and new designs. The exhibition zooms in on four specific aspects: the company’s history, production processes, design processes and use of the fabrics in fashion and art. In this presentation, developed especially for Vlisco’s 170th anniversary, the emphasis will be on the captivating visual qualities of the fabrics and on their powerful symbolism.
Both exhibitions are included in the extensive collaboration of the province of Brabant in concurrence with the proclamation of 2017 as ‘Mondriaan to Dutch Design Year’.
