Dear Shaded Viewers,

The Estonian photographer Alexander Gronsky is having his first exhibition at the Wapping Project Bankside. PASTORAL is a series of large format photographs of Moscow's suburban areas reminiscent of the arcadian images created by 19th century landscape painters and reconstructs them in a way that is reminiscent of a bygone era. Borders are blurred between urban and pastoral, utopian and dystopian and the actors are rendered ambiguous within these spaces. His work is a study of how people inhabit a territory and how human life effects the environment in this Apothocene age.

Included in this exhibition are three works from Gronsky's RECONSTRUCTION seriesthat documents reenactments of historic Russian battles. They are constructed as triptychs with titles like "Siege of Leningrad" and are reminiscent of a Hollywood film.

Alexander Gronsky was born in Tallinn, Estonia in 1980 and began work as a photographer in 1998.
