SARAH LUCAS AT WHITECHAPEL GALLERY – TEXT BY PHILIPPE POURHASHEMI

Dear Shaded Viewers,

If you happen to be in London until the 15th of December, do not miss Sarah Lucas' retrospective at Whitechapel Gallery. One of the most prominent voices within the YBA movement -which included the likes of Jake and Dinos Chapman, Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst- Lucas' art goes beyond its original context to achieve timelessness. Sex, pleasure and death are at the center of her preoccupations, as well as the tricky politics of gender and sexual identity. Whether it be through photographs, installations or sculptures, the British artist uses technique and imagination to craft a new language, which manages to be direct and sophisticated at the same time. Besides its obvious shock value, her art is touching and deeply human, forcing us to consider the essence of our being.
