SHORT FILM SYNOPSIS:
Inspiration for this video was found in a photo book called The Hampton Album 44 photographs made around 1900 by Frances B. Johnston of Hampton Institute. The director was intrigued by the pictures he had found. High quality photos made by one of the leading female photographers of that time in the USA showed African Americans in a way the director never had seen before. Consequently he made a series of pictures aiming at recreating the atmosphere of 1900.

SHORT DIRECTOR BIO:
Born in Hilversum in the Netherlands in 1959, Erwin Olaf has lived in Amsterdam since the early 1980s, where he currently works from his studio in a former church hall. His high-impact Chessmen series was  awarded first prize in the Young European Photographer competition, followed by an exhibition at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany. He has realized photo-series such as Mature (1999), Fashion Victims (2000), Royal Blood (2000), Paradise (2001)..
