The exhibition takes its title from the 1954 novel by Elizabeth Bowen, a subtle ghost story whose haunting takes place in the blinding sunlight and the heat of the day. The exhibition features five portraits, three statues, and five cities rendered in pastel, water colour, lithography and paint. In these works there is a tacit specter of love, characterized by the unshuttering that occurs within an American consciousness when in Europe, or in the magic noir of California…the movement of any previously sealed existence towards becoming a part of the world.
