180 Years of Delvaux at MoMu.

"Hand- made" and  "family- run" are 2 phrases that seem almost archaic
but they define the Belgian House of Delvaux, which, at almost 2 centuries
is older than the Belgian nation (founded in 1830).
The precisely- curated  (by Hettie Juddah) exhibition, under the direction
of Kaat Debo just opened at the Mode Museum MoMu in Antwerp
and it focuses on these aspects of the  luxury leather goods house
(often called the Belgian Hermes). The thorough catalogue
and compelling scenography (by Bob Verhelst) detail the time line of the house
which runs parallel to major changes in travel, such as the demise of leather bound road maps, Sabena Airlines (1923-2001)
and luxurious train travel.
The promise to believe in is that quality and skill still matter,
maybe more so in the overly franchised and branded era we have just passed through.
The exhibition includes an early collaboration with Martin Margiela (before the Maison)
and, more recently, Walter van Beirendonck (a special edition day glo Brillant bag ), Bruno Pieters, and current Creative Director,
Veronique Branquino
The opening was mobbed but the exhibition can be quietly viewed until 21.02.09.
