Dear Shaded Viewers,
The latest ‘Belgian’, born in Georgia (ex-Soviet Union) to spark the fashion planet is Demna Gvasalia. I already showed you his work when I was in Antwerp for their graduation show last weekend but here is a refresher:
Demna has been sketching for as long as he can remember but never dreamed of entering into the world of fashion that is until he presented a collecton at the caucasus fashion festival where he won 2nd place. After his family moved to Germany in 2001 he was reading Le Figaro and came upon an article that spoke about the top fashion schools on the planet, naturally the Royal Academy of Antwerp was sited. When Walter Van Beirendonck interviewed him for the entrance exam Demna had no idea who the players were in the Belgian fashion scene. His Antwerp experience turned his life upside down. The collection reflects upon his time spent in Antwerp over the past 4 years. During that time he experienced the history, got into the whole sailor/port story and was inspired by their knotting techniques along with their life style. His life in Antwerp had it’s ups and downs, he fell in love, he suffered and was happy and all of that is the substance behind his graduation collection.
He won the ITS3 fashion contest in Trieste a few years ago which gave him more confidence to continue. I was there actually, it was the only time that I attended the event. On a personal level he is a strong believer in God, loves his mom who showered him with her love, He has been inspired by his friend Peter who showed him things about himself that he never knew existed. He was thrilled when his brother was born and clearly he found himself in Antwerp. Headhunters take heed, Demna is currently looking for work and I think that the offers should soon be pouring in. 2006 has proven to be fashion’s year to celebrate the man.
