Dear Shaded Vieweres,
After decades of supporting others in the creative world, I’ve at last found a method to write my own story that feels organic and alive. My so-called autobiography resisted every conventional approach: three years of me writing yielded 3 pages then I tried it with three different ghostwriters and that did not feel right. Ultimately, I discovered my own way—a kind of lyrical patchwork.
Each Tuesday, I select one photograph from my archives (sometimes sublime, sometimes chaotic—never predictable) and recount the memory it evokes. There’s no prescribed sequence, no masterplan; just an unspooling of history as seen through whatever image surfaces that week. Over time, these entries form a living mosaic—a portrait told sideways, in moments rather than milestones.
I’m sharing this journey on Substack. Anyone can subscribe for free to stay updated, but the memoir itself sits behind a small paywall. In addition to the yearly subscription which is not much, a handful of founding subscribers have signed on already, entirely unprompted—a quiet reminder that, after championing so many others, it’s all right to let a few people champion me in return.
I’m, admittedly, a more natural promoter of others than of myself. If you feel inspired to help spread the word, it would mean a lot. Either way, I send wishes of calm and inspiration to you in these wonderfully unpredictable times.
Think of it as OnlyFans but without the porn.
Later,
Diane
