Peaky Blinders The Redemption of Thomas Shelby opened last night at La Seine Musicale in Boulogne, marking a significant moment in the adaptation of the popular series into a ballet contemporary dance performance.
The show is a collaboration between Steven Knight, the creator of the original series, and Benoit Swan Pouffer, the artistic director of the Rambert Dance Company. It combines dance, theater, and live music to retell the story of Thomas Shelby, set against the backdrop of post-World War I Birmingham.
Featuring 18 dancers, the performance is a two-hour spectacle that explores themes of trauma, ambition, and love. The choreography is intense and expressive, using the bodies of the dancers to convey the emotional depth of the characters. The show opens with a powerful scene depicting the Shelby brothers in the trenches of Flanders, highlighting the trauma that shapes their lives.
The soundtrack, which includes artists like Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Radiohead, and Anna Calvi adds a dramatic and haunting quality to the performance. The use of rock and folk elements, combined with techno-pop, creates a dynamic and immersive atmosphere that complements the dance and narrative.
The show has energetic and rebellious choreography which captures the social tensions of the original series while offering a unique and captivating dance experience that blends dance, music, and drama to retell the iconic story of Thomas Shelby in a new and captivating way. In addition to the choreography, and the music one must draw attention to the outstanding sets and staging and of course the costumes. Be prepared to be moved.
