Coverlette by Jean-Pierre Braganza

Dear Shaded Viewers,

I was in London for the past 5 days, two talks curated by Mei Hui, one at Koko in Camden where I ran into old friends from a few decades ago and another in Soho at Lighthouse. The following day, another trip down memory lane at Mei Hui’s pop up and I met Jean-Pierre Braganza again after quite a few years. he is creating one-of-a-kind pieces with zero-waste using antique coverlets and vintage military garments which I found quite intriguing. When I knew Jean-Pierre he was running a ready-to-wear brand in London for 12 years. In the end he got tired of the seasonal cycle of wholesale fashion and decided to find a way to focus on his true passion: design. The lockdown in the end proved beneficial to some of us and for Jean-Pierre the enforced slowness had him discovering the beauty of antique coverlets…hence the new brand Coverlet. The textiles were loomed in the 17th and 18th centuries by European settlers in North America, the stories these people lived were told in the textiles they wove. So JP found a way to bring their craftsmanship back to life by turning them into his Coverlette brand. The result is these once packed in the attic antiques have now been given a new life in the form of unique military jackets that can be worn, loved and kept forever.
