Balenciaga’s Circuit Sneaker. by Eliya Weinstein

Dear Shaded viewers,

Demna at Balenciaga does not hold back in his sneaker designs. Known for exaggerating size and technical details, he has contemporised the idea of the “dad shoe” and transformed it into a modern fashion staple.

The Circuit Sneaker is the latest take on athletic amplification.

It was conceptualised on the idea of Circuit training, where explosive exercises incorporating the full body are repeated one after the other. The continuous loop of energy and vigour evokes the potency of an electric current. The shoe was designed to support athletic activity, motion, and agility, with the comfort of a dynamic sole exaggerated conceptually under the ball and heel. Breathable and technical elements are referenced from classic sports shoes, such as aerodynamic vented panels and a fused eye stay. On the shoe’s exterior, three Balenciaga logo’s are italicised to further emphasise movement.

The sneaker has launched with a new campaign of portraits by Chris Lensz, featuring models Annabelle and Khadim. They both wear the sneakers in a silver and grey colourway, seated on brown wooden chairs afront a traditional, domestic wallpaper, and stare into the camera. The campaign leans towards athleisure styling, with Annabelle clutching a Balenciaga signature branded coffee cup, and Khadim dressed in a draping two-piece flannel set.
