Rebirth of an Icon: Balenciaga Revives the Legendary Le City Bag for a New Era

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Balenciaga’s latest campaign heralds the return of the cult classic Le City Bag, a design that left an indelible mark on Y2K fashion. Collaborating once more with renowned photographer Mario Sorrenti, the campaign features iconic personalities like Kate Moss and Nicole Kidman, along with models Amelia Gray and Kit Butler, to spotlight this timeless accessory.

The Balenciaga City Bag first appeared in the brand’s Spring/Summer 2001 collection under Nicolas Ghesquière’s creative direction. With only 25 bags produced initially, it became a highly sought-after item, gracing the arms of select fashion elites such as Carine Roitfeld, CR’s Editor-in-Chief, and Kate Moss. The fact that Moss has been seen carrying the unbranded, distressed leather bag has definitely brought renewed interest in this classic. Balenciaga revisits this iconic piece in their latest Le City Campaign, honouring both Kate Moss’s lasting influence and the legacy of Le City.

The City Bag is pre-distressed leather, adorned with bold buckles, straps, and studs, was designed in the early 2000s for the woman in search of something durable that they could carry on an everyday basis. That said the bag was not designed for special occasions, rather for every day, hold it, throw it over your shoulder and forget about it, it’s perfect and has clearly proven to be timeless.
