Jan Tcega John @ Bonne Espérance Gallery
Dear Shaded Viewers,
A note from Bonne Espérance Gallery
Jan Tcega John is one of the artists we’re currently exhibiting. The gallery presents the first exhibit in Paris of paintings by San artists. The San, once known as ”Bushmen,” are the original inhabitants of Southern Africa. San art has a history dating back over 20,000 years; the San are the creators of rock art in Southern Africa. We present works by 13 self-taught artists from a San artist collective based in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana. Works by artists from the collective are part of the permanent collections of numerous museums around the world.
Here we present “The Fall of the Cheetah” by Mr. John. John has been a full-time artist since 2005. Before that he worked as a mechanic but also made wood carvings. His work is characterized by his use of intricate patterns and vibrant colours to depict animals from the Kalahari. He’s lived his entire life in the Kalahari. Works by Mr John are part of the permanent collections of the Cambridge University Museum of Archeology and Anthropology and the Botswana National Museum.
