Dear Shaded Viewers,
In 2024, you will be able to immerse yourself in the visionary world of Japanese fashion designer Yuima Nakazato as the Museum of Lace and Fashion unveils a groundbreaking monographic exhibition. Nakazato’s artistic narrative unfolds at the confluence of innovation, tradition, and cutting-edge technology, creating a tapestry of sustainable fashion that draws inspiration from haute couture and traditional Japanese techniques. Happily I’ve witnessed his work since his school days at Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
Born in 1985 in Japan, Nakazato’s journey led him to graduate from the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 2008, where he garnered accolades, including the 2008 Innovation Award for introducing the origami technique into fashion. His subsequent presence on the esteemed stage of Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week marked a milestone, making him only the second Japanese designer, after Hanae Mori, to grace this prestigious event.
Nakazato’s commitment to crafting progressive, sustainable pieces with a profound emotional connection is evident throughout his collections. Drawing inspiration from nature – the haunting melodies of whales, the fiery glow of volcanoes, and the serenity of landscapes – his work embodies the influence of Asian philosophy.
A fervent advocate for mitigating the environmental impact of the fashion industry, Nakazato transforms his couture into a laboratory for responsible fashion. Collaborating with specialists, researchers, and industrialists, he pioneers innovative textiles and manufacturing processes, including 3-D printing and the creation of textile fibers using fermented bacteria.
Beyond the runway, Nakazato extends his artistic reach to stage productions, designing costumes for ballet, opera, and the upcoming premiere of “Idoménée” at Le Grand Théâtre de Genève in 2024.
Step into a futuristic and poetic universe co-created with the designer himself as the exhibition unfolds, showcasing fifty garments from the YUIMA NAKAZATO brand’s 2016-2024 couture collections. The immersive experience goes beyond the garments, offering a glimpse into Nakazato’s creative process through accessories, fashion sketches, technical drawings, fabric samples, and captivating photos and videos.
However you will have to wait until June 15th, 2024, to January 5th, 2025, witness the evolution of couture at its intersection with art, sustainability, and innovation.
Later,
Diane
