Homme Plissé Issey Miyake SS21 by Aybuke Barkcin

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Pleats pleats pleats!

On July 10th, Issey Miyake revealed its Homme Plissé collection with a playful video titled “Meet Your New Self”. The Homme Plissé line is a lifestyle brand for modern men with the aim to liberate the way they dress.

A pioneering brand for textile technology, the pleats were first launced in Issey Miyake’s collection in 1988, a unique tecnique to “garment pleating”, a single thread is used and the pleats are added after sewing the clothes into the shape. One of the most recognisable aspects of the brand, the pleats by time became a brand of their own. Light and wrinkle-proof, the fabric can stretch and move in various ways, always returning back to its original form.

The video was the creative director Yusuke Kobayashi’s “take on people discovering their new selves, featuring the idea behind the collection: looking forward to the future and living through the life in transition.” It introduced three characters that changed their attitudes as they transitioned in to different looks. There were colorful prints, loosely tailored looks, robe-like coats and tracksuits.

A fun introduction to the collection, the subjects presented a playful performance demonstrating how light and comfortable the garments can be with a hopeful message about the future, continuing to justify Issey Miyake’s famous saying, “design is not for philosophy, but for life”
