Dear Shaded Viewers,
George Root is the founder of the New York based fine jewellery brand Milamore. The idea behind the brand is to create fine jewellery that you could wear every day and that has a tale to each piece. The name of the brand Milamore is a tribute to his grandmother, her name was Milagros which means “miracle” in Spanish, but people close to her called her Mila, George combined her nickname with the Italian word for love amore and there you have the genesis of the brand name Milamore. George was born in the Philippines, was raised in Japan and now is based in New York where he designs the fine jewellery. It is crafted in the foothills of Mount Fuji using heritage techniques. One line of the jewellery represents spirit animals: the crane, the goldfish and the turtle. George’s spirit animal is the goldfish. He even got the goldfish as a tattoo. The crane sends wishes to the heavens, the goldfish brings good fortune and wealth and the turtle provides calmness and longevity. Other pieces refer to puzzle pieces and can be linked together. The pieces are in gold, some have diamonds or other precious stones.
When I visited George in his Paris showroom he showed me his new candle collection, Kintsugi . Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum thus making the scars precious. George believes we all live with our scars. The new candle collection consists of two scents, the white vessel features notes of Sampaguitta, the national flower of the Philippines where George Root was born. The navy vessel features the scent of black walnut inspired by the tree that grows in his home in Upstate New York.
