Marimekko ss16 – by Sophie Joy Wright

Dear Diane and Shaded Viewers,

Known as an institution of print design, [and my go-to place when I’m feeling blue] Marimekko has been making garments alongside their textiles, linens and homewares since 1951, though now it seems they’re bringing the sartorial side to the forefront. Set in the Palais de Tokyo, Anna Teurnell presented her first collection as the Creative Director of the Finnish design house. Continuing the colour and print focus of the brand, garments were full of life and totally refreshing. Simple in cut, the shift dresses, jumpsuits, and long, billowy day-dresses were practical and easy on the eye. Whilst the graphic black-and-white prints were predictably strong (though I’ve seen that grid-print a few times this season), the soft florals in bright orange, pink and yellow had an air of 70s to them, particularly in those front-creased cropped trousers; something I wasn’t expecting to see from this brand. Along with the new offering of shoes and eyewear, Marimekko’s exuberant take on minimalism can now be a total-look. How fun.

Happy Tuesday,

Sophie
