Outside Errors is the title of the recent series of drawings by David West presented at Mannerheim Gallery in Paris.
Looking at water and vegetation, seascapes and urban sites, from various trips to Israel, Australia, Bretagne… The Paris based American artist is pursuing a change of direction of gaze to other territories with a fresh field of expression and a large series of landscapes. As a result from a personal work he has developed since 2002, (as seen in a previous show at Nuke Gallery), and the recent accident on the beach where he only had his son’s felt-tipped pens to exorcise the feelings and visions of that summer holiday.
In this series, we can recognize the personal touch, the rock n’roll silhouettes, the falsely childish and so righteously accurate drawings of his perception of things and beings. With the bright landscapes on small formats of “Outside Errors”, vegetation, skies, modern and historical urban elements, the new scenes David West is giving us to see what could be relevant of a new energy.
The new is not only in the technique, but mostly in the nature of the landscapes. From the Parisian scenes of Montmartre, Le Siège du Parti Communiste Français, the Jardin du Luxembourg, to the beaches of Tel Aviv and landscapes of Melbourne, the often dis-proportioned perspectives are somehow “wrong” but the ambiance is very well retrieved and we recognize the true talent of David West as he gives us a peak at an interior world he translates best in drawings.
The felt-tipped pen on paper and aquarelle drawings are authentically retrieving moments of contemplation where he openly reveals new technical evolution and a search to a satisfying sense of narration.
We better know David West with his underground edge as the portraitist of the music scene with his large series of rehearsals and concerts developed over a couple decades between the USA and France, The upstairs of the gallery links to this ongoing rock series with probably the two best paintings of David I have ever seen. Here out of the rehearsal studios and concert halls, under the outside lights, there are not only “Outside Errors”, as it reveals a personal quest filled with intuitive signs of new perspectives.
The show is open from Wednesday to Saturday, until April 15th, at MANNERHEIM GALLERY , 6 rue Notre-Dame de Nazareth, Paris.
