ART021 is an officially sanctioned project of the 18th China Shanghai International Arts Festival that brings together 84 of the world’s leading galleries from 29 cities and showcases the most significant artist today across its main and special sections.
2011 ART021 was divided into three major sections: Main Galleries, Approach and Beyond Public Projects. Out of 200 applications, the ART021 Selection Committee chose 84 galleries to present solo and group exhibitions across the three sections.
MAIN GALLERIES: with a focus on 21st-century contemporary art, this is the main section of the fair. Out of the 64 main galleries, 16 are participating for the first time at ART021: David Zwirner, Greene Naftali, Hauser & Wirth, Massimo De Carlo, Kukje Gallery/Tina Kim Gallery, ESLITE GALLERY, Take Ninagawa, Tokyo Gallery + BTAP, Esther Schipper/Johnen Galerie, Balice Hertling, ONE AND J. Gallery, GALLERY HYUNDAI, Whitestone Gallery, Galerie nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder, PIFO Gallery, Green Park View.
APPROACH: Solo presentations—curated projects or bodies of work by a single artist of any age. Curatorial projects—curated group shows, with up to 3 individual artists. 20 galleries were chosen to participate in this section of the fair, with 14 presenting their work for the first time: 1335MABINI, Gallery EM, Gallery SIDE 2, 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Galerie Huit, NUOART, Inna Art Space, YIYUAN SPACE, GALERIE OVO, Gallery 55, LEO GALLERY, C5Art, X Gallery, Tabula Rasa Gallery. “The special sector ‘APPROACH’ is for galleries showing solo presentations by artists of any age or shows with a curatorial approach. This will be a really interesting part of the fair to discover with galleries from China, South Korea, Japan and the Philippines. ”said the Fair Director Thomas Wuestenhagen.
BEYOND Public Projects brings together five works, from paintings, sculptures and onsite installations. Hauser & Wirth brings a sculpture, Solarum Series I, by Bharti Kher. Matthew Liu Fine Art presents an onsite installation Still life of Space Time by Thomas Canto. ARARIO GALLERY brings a large outdoor installation Garden by Byoungho Kim. Chambers Fine Art presents Ten Thousand Things by Wu Jian’an. Additionally, a video work Party for Everybody by Yang Zhenzhong from Cc Foundation will also be featured in BEYOND Public Projects.
The Academy award winner Adrien Brody has embraced his lifelong passion for painting and fine art and has transitioned into becoming a professional painter. As a special project, Brody will participate in this upcoming ART021 with his Hooked series, which calls upon the viewer to find light in a dark world through a collection of lively, colorful painted fish.
