The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is an unconventional setting for a fashion week event, so when I heard about the collaboration between designer Eva Xu’s creative chic brand, All Comes From Nothing (ACFN) and media platforms TOUTIAO & UNIPX, my interest was piqued. Boarding the ship, I walked past the runway setup where I spied on models doing one last one-through before the show. I managed to catch the end of a fashion forum led by UNIPX and TOUTIAO and actually learned a few things about the distribution of fashion and entertainment content in China, their home-base.
Then it was time for the show. As the fashionable guests filtered into their seats, I wondered in excitement whether this successful Eastern brand is about to become a shining star in the West. When I saw the etherial collection float past in shades of white, blue, and pink as fresh as a bouquet of peonies, I realized the answer is a resounding “yes.”
I exist, It is soft, so soft, so slow, And light, suspends in the air, It moves.
So opens the program notes and look book for All Comes From Nothing, SS17. There’s nothing new about pastels or cutouts, or voluminous dresses with teeny straps, but it’s the way that Xu combines these elements that makes her line so appealing – and totally wearable. This season’s collection is inspired by the otherworldly light installations of American artist James Turrell. His signature luminescent shapes shine through in Xu’s design aesthetic. Dresses hang light as a feather on delicate wax strings, loving laced in the back. Asymmetrical and sheer details enliven the classic separates. The clean lines and breathable materials make this collection look like an absolute joy to wear. I will be scouting it online as soon as it becomes available, and I think you should keep your eyes on All Comes From Nothing as well.
