THE WAPPNG PROJECT BANKSIDE in MAYFAIR ABBAS KOWSARI

Dear Shaded Viewers,

The Wapping Project Bankside has selected a body of work representingseveral series from 2006-2014 away from cliche and sterotypical images of Iran and to enter Kowsari's political, witty world. Kowsari's photography is a reflection of the reality of modern Iranian society, dealing with topics like the aftermath of conflict, being constrained by gender inequality, addressing notions of masculinity or confronting the raw elements of the country like water, earth, light.

Abbas Kowsari was bornin Tehran in 1970. He uses his photography as a way of talking to the world. He has worked for over ten years at leading newspapers in Iran, most of them have now been banned from publishing. He currently works as the senior photo editor for Shargh newspaper in Tehran. He has been published in the New York Times, Paris Match and Der Spiegel, among others.

Kowsari is unable to travel to the UK for this exhibition. He is unable to be interviewed by telephone, but e mail is possible and for that you can contact jules at the wappingproject.
