“A GREAT YOUTH” ALESSANDRO SIMONETTI / TOKYO

Dear Shaded Viewers,

Imagine a childhood spent between a nudist beach in Rome in the 80's with a hippie Dad and a more conservative youth in Venice  with an ex-hippie mom, well that is exactly how artist/photographer Alessandro Simonetti grew up. May 23rd "A Great Youth" will open at SATURDAYS NYC  in Daikanyama. "A Great Youth" features a series of images shot in 35 mm black and white film between Cuba, Rome, Venice, New York and Berlin which span nearly a decade. The title of the exhibition "A Great Youth" expresses his unique childhood with his artist parents. It also references the fact that all of the images are shaped, even if in a mature way, from his approach to street cultures in the early '90's in Italy.

in addition, Simonetti will display a retrospective of printed matter produced within the past decade which includes "Small Kings" (a book shot in Jamaica during the Passa Passa dance hall in Kingston), "Il Clan Del Wu (the first reunion of WU TANG in Rome), "Release" (a collection of music contact sheets also featured in the last issue of Saturdays Magazine), "Never Forget the Warriors" (his most recent work about a punk Reunion in 2008).

His images reflect contemporary movements such as punk, hardcore, hip-hop and niche cultures. His publications have been distributed internationally at Colette, Oening Ceremony, the Newstand, PS1, MOMA, Printed Matter, Dashwood, Family LA, and Archana. His work has also been shown at galleries around the globe, including OH WOW, Leica Gallery, the Tate Modern, Via Farini DOCVA, Patricia Armocida, Gramercy Arts Club and Jarach Gallery. And…I'm happy to say, the image that opens my site was taken when we met in NYC a few years ago.

Later,

Diane
