SECOND DAY OF THE BIENNALE DI VENEZIA by david gil

During my second day, I concentrated my visit of the Biennale to the 28 permanent pavilions inside the Giardini where each country has entire freedom within their own boundaries.

Special attention should be given to the Danish Pavilion and its daring exhibition called Speech Matters curated by Katerina Gregos exploring freedom of speech. According to Denmark, the question of freedom of speech is one that is being increasingly contested in authoritarian regimes and in liberal democracies where civil liberties seem to be increasingly under threat. the question of freedom not only relates to artistic expression, freedom of the media and internet, but also to the way we inhabit and occupy public space. What is the nature of artistic freedom at a time when the question of artistic autonomy is being compromised by corporate or private interests?

Featuring 18 international artists from 12 countries where freedom of speech is contested, Denmark is today throwing an artistic boom urging a serious debate.
