DISCOVERING JORGE MANILLA’S WORK – TEXT BY PHILIPPE POURHASHEMI

Dear Shaded Viewers,

I guess I was instantly hooked when I met Jorge Manilla. Born in Mexico City in the 1970s, he lives and works in Ghent. Inspired by religion, the toughness of life and personal experiences, his jewellery pieces are spiritual and emotionally charged. Evoking entrapment, martyrdom and body organs, they have an identity and narrative of their own. I was sensitive to his approach and loved the way he combined materials, creating new visual sensations.
