Dragos Olea reports on studioBASAR (research and architecture) from Bucharest

Studiobasar - ars telefonica 1 (2008) (Small)

Dear Shaded Viewers,

studioBASAR is an architectural office that was established in Bucharest in 2006 by Alex Axinte and Cristi Borcan. They consider their studio a "search and rescue" team, acting as an agent of architectural observations and interventiosn. They draw attention to marginal topics such as banality, improvisation or illegality as a part of the dynamic system of contemporary urban culture.

Recent projects include the exhibition display for the Romanian pavilion at the Venice Biennial 2009 and the version for the well known  Renaissance Society art centre in Chicago 2010 (they got excellent feedback also for their contribution for the pavilion and the exhibition in magazines like Flash Art, Art in America, etc), few smart interventions in Bucharest during Street Delivery, Ars Telefonica!, TUB and the publication of Evicting the Ghost research about the situation of the evacuated tenants from the former nationalized properties.

just a fewmonths ago they won the competition for the modernisation of an iconic construction, the only Hippodrome in Romania.

The evacuation of the ghost is a strategic public proposal , the ghost house hovers from time to time over the sidewalks in front of the real house, the ghost house has no walls, windows or roof. The ghost house is just furniture, pillows, carpets, potted plants and sometimes even a cat. This is a forced evacuated family house. basar proposes the design of a loudspeaker for the use of the ghost house's dwellers. The loudspeaker answers the needs of protection, of identity and intimacy of the dwellers, as a better way to protest.
