From 2003-2006 I handmade 500 miniature couture-like gowns from felt out of the frustration of not being able to create them life size. I have been designing clothes since I was seven and worked as a designer of women's dresses and then juniour sportswear from the time I was 13-18. In my later 20's, after designing a collection and styling for Trent Reznor of the band Nine Inch Nails, I took all the money I made and started a mens & womens sportswear collection called DOM CASUAL. I went out of business after being sued by American Airlines for stealing their day-glo blue blankets and turning them into short sexy dresses with condom pockets. It made for great press, but officially ended my designing career- at least in the real world. A few years later, while playing Barbie's with my niece, I started taking scraps of fabric and draping them on the dolls- thus my fever was reborn and I began to make dozens of dresses out of felt which is VERY moldable and perfect for the small size I was working in. I went out and bought 5 Black & Asian Barbie dolls, the Black one named Christie. I decided to photograph each outfit I made and started building small lit sets and thinking in terms of Avedon meets Mugler meets Meisel meets Toledo in a Russ Meyer meets Irving Penn dream. I also decided to photograph the images solarized so they looked more like paintings and almost life like. After about 2 years of shooting, I had amassed a huge body of images and started showing them. My friend the illustrator/artist Michael Economy convinced me to show them and came up with the name for the show, GET CHRISTY SUPERSTAR. MAC Cosmetics was kind enough to sponsor my show and I had it in San FranDisco at Ver-Unica in July of 2006. I still design about 20 sketchbooks worth of clothes a year, but these 500 miniature dresses, coats and accessories will always remain my proudest achievment because I designed them for me really, not for a company or client. Therefore I was free to do whatever I wanted and for a stubborn Leo that is pure bliss.
